30 Years After The Rwandan Genocide

Published: 07/04/2024

These days, we commemorate 30 years since the Rwandan Genocide.

It was April 6, 1994, when the plane carrying the Rwandan president, Juvénal Habyarimana, and the Burundian president, Cyprien Ntaryamira, was shot down by two rockets while landing in Kigali.

This event marked the beginning, just a few hours later, of the Rwandan genocide.

In Rwanda, in just 100 days, from April 7 to mid-July 1994, at least 800,000 Tutsi were killed, along with tens of thousands of rapes and children enlisted as soldiers.

Within three months, nearly one million people were murdered, not only Tutsi but also moderate Hutu who refused to participate in the massacres.

Following the immense tragedy that struck the country and the terrible malnutrition that starved the population, on March 21, 1995, the first mission of a group of doctors began, which eventually led to the founding of NutriAid on February 29, 1996.
