Data visualisation in Joal-Fadiouth: young people turn fishing data into knowledge

Published: 26/10/2026

In recent weeks, 48 young people in Joal-Fadiouth took part in a data visualisation training course, as part of the project “Yessal Napp Gi – With young people for innovative, sustainable and inclusive fishing in Senegal”.

Why data matters
Artisanal fishing is the engine of Joal-Fadiouth’s economy, yet information about what happens at sea is often fragmented and hard to access. Knowing how much is caught and how resources change over time is essential to managing the sector sustainably and making informed decisions, both for those who make a living from fishing and for public institutions.

From collection to chart
Guided by expert trainers, participants learned to collect, digitise and analyse data, then turn it into clear, easy-to-understand charts and reports. Exercises based on real cases from local fishing allowed them to put their new tools into practice straight away.

Next steps
At the end of the course, each participant was assessed by the trainers. Based on the results, some of the young people will be supported in launching a micro-enterprise dedicated to the digital monitoring of artisanal fishing. It will collect data, including through innovative tools such as drones, and make it available to public bodies, research institutes, environmental organisations and tour operators.

Yessal Napp Gi is made possible by the support of Only The Brave Foundation and aims to open up new careers for the young people of Joal-Fadiouth linked to the digitalisation of fishing.

Thank you to Only The Brave Foundation for investing in these young people’s skills.
