In the past few weeks, in Joal-Fadiouth, 38 young women and men took part in the Digital Marketing and Communication training, part of the project "Yessal Napp Gi – With Young People for Innovative, Sustainable and Inclusive Fishing in Senegal".
A new profession, starting from the sea
Joal-Fadiouth is Senegal’s main artisanal fishing port, and fishing is the heart of its economy. Yet the sector remains largely undigitalised, and those who work in it, especially the women who sell fish, struggle to increase their income and to make their products known.
For this reason, the training started from what participants know best: the sea, the port, the daily work of those who live from fishing. Using digital tools, the young people learned to tell stories, promote and sell online, turning a reality they know well into content and offers capable of reaching new listeners.
A hands-on course
The sessions were led by trainers with expertise in the field, using an approach based on real-life cases and on tools applied to the reality of local fishing. This method encouraged strong participant engagement, through practical activities and group discussion.
What happens next
These skills are the foundation from which, in the coming months, a digital platform may emerge, connecting women fish sellers with their customers to strengthen their income and opportunities.
At the end of the course, the trainers assessed the skills acquired by each participant. On the basis of these assessments, the most deserving young people may be supported in taking their next steps towards starting their own micro-enterprise.
