Fish farming in Joal-Fadiouth: young people learn to raise fish to protect the sea

Published: 20/10/2026

In recent weeks, 35 young women and men in Joal-Fadiouth took part in a fish farming training course, part of the project “Yessal Napp Gi – With young people for innovative, sustainable and inclusive fishing in Senegal”.

An alternative for the sea and for jobs
Joal-Fadiouth is Senegal’s main artisanal fishing port, and fishing is the heart of its economy. But marine resources are under growing pressure and, for many young people, job prospects remain uncertain.
Fish farming, the sustainable rearing of fish, offers a different path: producing fish without putting further strain on the sea, contributing to families’ food security and creating new sources of income.

A hands-on course
The sessions were led by experts and covered rearing techniques, environmental management, food safety and business management. The approach, based on real cases and tools tailored to local fishing, encouraged participants to take an active part.

What happens next
At the end of the course, the trainers assessed the skills acquired by each participant. Based on these assessments, some of the young people will be supported in launching a sustainable, low-impact fish farming micro-enterprise to produce and sell the fish they raise.

Yessal Napp Gi is made possible by the generous support of Only The Brave Foundation. Its aim is to give young people a local prospect of work and independence, while strengthening a more innovative, sustainable and inclusive fishing sector.

Heartfelt thanks to Only The Brave Foundation for supporting the young people of Joal-Fadiouth.
