The training of Community Health Agents is crucial in the fight against child malnutrition. They are in fact, in many cases, the only outposts of the national health system in the most remote places.
They are volunteers who in their rural communities represent the vanguard of modern medicine to diagnose, prevent and treat the most common diseases. The few health facilities are often far from villages and long journeys on donkey-drawn carts and rough tracks are certainly not comfortable for transporting the sick.
In the municipality of Loul Sessène, for over 27,000 inhabitants there is only one doctor - a religious, pediatrician - and 5 nurses.
The 63 Community Health Agents are, therefore, an important resource to ensure proximity health services and to avoid congestion of the 5 manned clinics.
NutriAid has firmly chosen to train and support them in their tireless daily work.
Awa, has recently joined the NutriAid team in Senegal. Born and raised near Loul Sessène, with a degree in nutrition and a great determination to spend her skills for a just cause, Awa moves from village to village to work alongside the Community Health Agents, to constantly improve the monitoring of children’s nutritional status, educate mothers on a balanced diet for children under 5, support malnourished children with high-protein flours made by NutriAid from local agricultural products.
The project "High Technology to Fight Malnutrition" is financed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with the 8x1000 Irpef share.
