In recent weeks, we have presented to you the conditions at the Khelcom Centre in Joal where fish is processed and transformed, a place where the fish is exposed on the ground and during the rains is reached by contaminated water polluted by human and animal waste.
During these last weeks, activities have been carried out to clean up and repair the drainage canals of the highly salted waters resulting from the first stage of fish processing.
NutriAid, through the Sardinegal project, has supported the drainage operations, while the staff on the filed followed the progress of the work.
The sewage system allows rainwater to drain away during the hivernage, which would otherwise flood the centre, and considering that fish rests on the ground, this would cause a contamination.
The system has been cleaned from sand and garbage and connected to the water network.
In addition, the team will create better covers for the canals than the current ones, so that sand and rubbish will not block the system during the dry season.
Sardinegal is funded by the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers with the 8x1000 Irpef quota.
