Let's discover together the Khelcom Centre in Joal

Today, we want to tell you about the Khelcom center, a market for processed fish products and an important fish processing site in the city of Joal, where NutriAid implements numerous interventions as part of the Sardinegal project.

The Khelcom site was originally located in a remote area of Joal, but today it is surrounded by houses. Although it is not far from the port, during the rainy season it is difficult to reach because it is surrounded by mud and waste. Carts arriving loaded with fish unload everything on the ground, where staff then clean and salt the fish, which is placed on tables for drying or in ovens for smoking.

This way, the fish is exposed on the ground and during rains, it is reached by water contaminated by human and animal waste, as well as by small creatures like snails.

These are just some of the problems NutriAid is working to address because improving the hygienic and sanitary conditions of fish processing—an essential part of the local economy—means providing children with safer and more nutritious food.

The project is funded by the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers with the 8x1000 Irpef quota.
