The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024

Published: 30/07/2024

A few days ago, the report The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024 was published, prepared by FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO*; an annual global monitoring report for Sustainable Development Goal 2: ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.

With six years remaining until 2023, unfortunately, the indicators related to nutrition within the Sustainable Development Goals show that the world is not on track to achieve Zero Hunger and eliminate all forms of malnutrition.

Billions of people still lack access to nutritious, safe, and sufficient food. However, progress achieved in many countries offers hope that we can get back on track to ending hunger and malnutrition.

Here are some key points from the report:

  • In 2023, between 713 and 757 million people faced hunger: about 1 in 11 people worldwide and 1 in 5 in Africa.
  • Malnutrition affected 9.1% of the global population in 2023, up from 7.5% in 2019.
  • Africa remains the region with the highest percentage of the population suffering from hunger, at 20.4%.
  • Food insecurity continues to affect women more than men, although the gender gap has narrowed in 2023.
  • The prevalence of food insecurity is also consistently higher in rural areas compared to urban areas.
